I bought a natural-skin tupan at Pennsic last year and, sadly, busted one of the heads THIS Pennsic. I was hoping to replace the head with one of the Remo synthetic ones, but none of the sizes fit (or so it seems). My drum appears to have a 40 cm diameter, which is like 15.7 inches. So the 16" Remo is too large, and the 15" is too small.
Am I just going to have to put another natural hide on it? Or is there such a thing as a 40 cm synthetic head?
Thanks!

Re: Synthetic Head for Busted Tupan Skin?
Sun, August 30, 2009 - 10:52 PMYou could try taking an oversize head, cutting it off it's ring, and mounting it like a skin. -

While composing my reply here, I realized that I'm not even sure how I would affix a Remo that DID fit! I'm on unfamiliar ground, never having replaced a drum head before. My tupan is rope-tensioned/tuned, and has a wooden ring. It looks exactly like this (but for the size): www.mid-east.com/itemdesc.asp
The natural skin had sets of punched holes around it where the rope attached to the ring. Would I punch holes in the synthetic head?
Thanks!

Mon, August 31, 2009 - 10:08 AMi would worry about tearing. it would be easier to get 4 appropriately sized djembe rings and re-head it like a djembe, IMO. -
