Has anyone heard of using a rope instead of a ring to hold synthetic heads onto his tupan? I was looking at pictures of Kevin Hartnell's tupan on the Teribus site, and it looks like his Remo head is held on not with a second ring, but with a rope where a 2nd ring would be, the side ropes knotted to it at 3-4 inch intervals. Is that what I'm seeing? I suppose it could be s solid ring wrapped in fabric.
I'm hoping to do the same thing. Does anyone have any advice on how to knot the ropes at the rings?
Thanks.
Ken

Re: Using a Rope as a Ring for Tupan/Dawul?
Mon, September 28, 2009 - 5:25 PMThe Remo heads (and all commercial synthetic heads) are made so that what would be the "flesh ring" as on a dunnun or djembe is a part of the head itself. The "ring" that you are seeing is a metal hoop that fits snugly against the drum head ring and it is tightened with what is called in West African drummer circles as a "Mali Weave"/
. You can see this type of set up on one of the Tupans/Davuls/Daoullis/Tabla Baladis that I made in this photo:

Tue, September 29, 2009 - 6:29 PMThanks Jeffrey! That's great. Now if I could find a 40cm Remo and the right size hoops, I'd be all set;).
Remo told me they'd have to make 40 cm heads custom. Sigh.
Cheers!

Re: Using a Rope as a Ring for Tupan/Dawul?
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 3:56 PMKen,
I am not sure how it would with a synthetic head, but I have my friend head their dunun with either using rope instead of a second ring (just using one length of rope tied slightly smaller than the circumference of the ring and then a second round with loops knotted for your verticals to go through), and I have also seen it done with no metal rings at all, so that it sits tight around the body of the drum. One length of thick cord was used in the place of the ring, the skin folded back over it, then holes punched through both layers and a second cord above that with loops being pulled through to the underside to create loops for the verticals.
I can try to find pics or a better explanation if you car. Again, I have no idea how this would work on a synthetic head
good luck -

Re: Using a Rope as a Ring for Tupan/Dawul?
Wed, September 30, 2009 - 4:03 PMThe knot used on the ring is a larks head

The only diffenece than this image is that the rope would be running parallel to the ring. Your vertical rope would then run up on one side of the knot than back down on the other. -
