Where to buy? What to buy?

Where do you folks like to purchase your drums? I am fairly new to drumming, but getting to the point where quality makes a difference. I won't be able to go to Pennsic anytime soon. And I have learned to be very wary of Ebay. Any suggestions on suppliers that you guys favor? And also, what to look for (and look out for!) in doumbeks and other drums? Basically what I'm asking is, if I had a decent little wad of money and you were going to take me shopping, where would we go and what would we look at? And what would we avoid? And why?

Purchases I am considering in my future (1-5 years):
A) Doumbek/Darbuka with great resonating sound and tonal range. Synthetic head that can handle humid summer SCA camping. Sturdy construction. Looks matter somewhat, but sound is more important than looks. Needs a responsive head that will still satisfy me as I progress in skill.

B) Riqq. Same basic requirements. Needs to have good quality heavy jingles. (I currently own a piece of worthless crap that has "jingles" that were stamped out of a used "Tiger Bond" adhesive can. So much for "handmade" quality from the middle east) Again, great sounding synthetic head is a must, unless a tunable skin head will be able to keep up with humidity.

C) Frame drum that has all the same qualities again. Something that I can use alternately as a bodhran with a tipper for irish stuff and as a tar/def for hand-drumming ME stuff. I dig a deep resonating bass note.

Are the Fiberskyn and Skyndeep heads by Remo considered to be good heads for SCA use? Can a "tunable" drum with a natural skin manage to stay tight on a humid night outside? For fixed natural heads (like I currently have), is there a way to keep them tight? Or should I leave them at home and just invest in the drums I have mentioned above?

Any advice is welcome,
Juan Diego

True enough. Ebay is hit or miss. The first drum I bought was a big wooden djembe from ebay. I love it. But the riqq mentioned above was also from ebay. The picture and description looked great, but the actual product is really just a decoration. I can't call it "instrument quality". And the 10.5" x 15.5" Alexandria doumbek I just ordered was delivered as a tiny little child size drum with a head printed with the name "ALESKANDARIA". Seriously. The seller won't respond to my messages to resolve the issue but responded immediately when I gave him negative feedback. "Why?????" he said.

So now I'm left wondering how to discern good products from junk online. There is nobody that I know of locally that sells these instruments so I am left to trust the descriptions and order online.

I will certainly look at Nileshop.net.

I second (or third or fourth) Nileshop. I bought my drum from them a couple years ago and its really great. Its one of those Ghawaret al fin (sp?) ones. I've seen a few that weren't that great, but mine was really good, well made and good tone. At the time it was cheap enough I took the risk but they may have gone up.

Well, if you can't make it to Pennsic, you *could* order from a great vendor that attends Pennsic every year:

    www.touchtheearth.com/

Touch The Earth is run by a family of awesome folks. I own a doumbek from them that I got for my birthday 7 or 8 years ago - it's a great drum. I wouldn't hesitate to order instruments from them, or (obviously) recommend them to others.

I don't know about their drums, but I bought my saz from Scott at TTE last year over the phone. I'd say based on the quality of the product and the great service, they'd probably be the only ones I would ever feel comfortable with buying a drum from sight unseen. Online was the only way I was ever going to be able to get a saz and I was very uneasy about the idea. There are just SO many people here on tribe that have had positive experiences with them, though (I've yet to see a bad one, actually) that it sounded like my best bet (and I'm very glad I took the chance).

Juan I'd 2nd this suggestion too. Depends on the kind of drum you want, they mostly carry Turkish ones (I believe). But they are great people, and a lot closer than Egypt even if they aren't near here.

another option is going online to order from daveed or raquay, they both are proffesional drummers and have developed their own lines. which are custom made in batches that they have quality control over. both use their own drums for productions and live gigs. i also heard raquay is also so good on customer service if a drum arrives with even a dent chip or scratch she replaces it pronto. also she has them all perfectly tuned to a c note when shipped. i have never bought their drums as i already have 5 drums by that point, however heard and seen both their drums in person, beautiful, and others here who have bought them can tell ya what they think.

          hope thats useful

I've bought some of my african drums at the flea markets in Santa Fe, NM and Albuquerque,NM.
I have bought skins, for re-heading, from mid-east Manufacturing online.
I've also gotten a few drums from people in the SCA who were quitting playing, for whatever reason.

oh forgot riqqs are hard to get,.. TTE sometimes doesn't have many at all, only had 2 i think last year maybe or year before. i'd go online and google suhail kaspar, he's an awesome riqq player, has his own high quality consistent made riqq for sale. its exspensive but again its the one he plays and teaches on. lets see from what i remember its red, has heavy brass cymbols, synthetic head maybe tunable but don't think so and has cut outs in the back rim to reduce wieght for the wrist of us girls ;D and also its easier to reach the thumb around to hold for shorter finger individuals and kids.

his web site www.neareastmusic.com, i was trying to see the drums for sale but if you mail him to find out you'd get an answer if your interested.

That's the REMO Glen Velez series. Nice instruments. They are always on 4 month back order. ;-(
